A very important task in a mine is "bolting" or rock reinforcement. At these depths, the rock pressure is enormous.

After blasting, loose rock is knocked down in an operation called scaling and then the rock is sprayed with concrete. In order to compensate for the structural weakening by the removed rock, long bolts are affixed into the rock. A more modern method is practised in this mine, where this tedious work has been replaced by feeding in a steel wire, which is "glued" in place by concrete.
