Skin colors typically get very white with the 1Ds in studio strobe lighting. I white-balanced both shots to the neutral grey background to get comparable results.

The angle is slightly different, but both strobes are bounced and one has a large softbox on it. The bleak highlights on the hand, particularly on the thumb is not due to overexposure or direct flashlight - this is the way unprocessed 1Ds strobe shots look like from my experience...
