To the right is an infra-red LED with a very narrow (8 degrees) beam which illuminates a phototransistor to the left (also with a 8 degrees lens). As the bullet passes, the light gets interrupted and a separate trigger unit is used to trigger the flash. Further - the carbon dioxide used as the propellant gas effectively absorbs IR light, which makes detection simple and accurate.
