In real life usage...

Here, I am standing down in the mine with the remote in my right hand and a manually triggered flash in my left. The camera is about 8-10 meters away. The drift is pitch dark and walking without light is dangerous (and very hard as well). Being able to trigger the camera with the remote allows you to make shots like this one without a helping hand from someone else...
