The wheels were first changed from an all-steel design, as this contributed to a large amount of wear on the cable, as well as an increased level of noise. The first approach was to add a nylon tire to the wheel, but this was gradually changed to an all-nylon design. It seems like the elements of nature have taken a hard toll on this polymer material though...
