One bizarre phenomenon in Sicily that it took me some time to realize was the abandoned roads. Not that abandoned roads is something strange per se, but these are semi-finished or apparently never really put into service. One could just speculate what the stories behind these are and to me bribery and theft of public funds comes first. However, one could also assume that quite a few of these projects were designated as relief efforts as mines closed and there was an overall desire to modernize the infrastructure.
