Chemical plants can be really nasty, especially when they’re dealing with organic compounds. This one is no exception and given that it went bankrupt some time ago surely does not make things better. Although its final fate is not set, it seems like abandoned plants like this one (i.e. located far away from prosperous areas) follows a more or less predestined path after a bankruptcy;

1. The plant is sold by the solicitor to someone for $1, promising to re-open or demolish and clean up
2. Working/valuable machinery and parts are sold to serious actors
3. Valuable scrap, such as copper, stainless steel and other metals is sold to serious actors
4. Less serious actors buy stuff in bulk at a low cost
5. Looters steal left over copper and other stuff that can be traded easily
6. Off-site garbage, tires and/or toxic waste is dumped at the site
7. The new owner disappears and is nowhere to be found
8. The local community ends up with yet another problem and government money is needed to clean up old environmental sins
9. The place is left for some time until rain, wind and frost causes fundamental structural problems, ultimately causing danger
10. A large fire breaks out, ruining the site and large amounts of toxic waste is released
11. Additional government money is required for final clean-up and demolition
