The latest real period of famine here in Sweden occurred as late as 1860-1870 and during that period and the following forty years, almost one million Swedes emigrated, primarily to the United States. During WWI, the severe food shortages probably brought up bad memories from the starvation some fifty years earlier. The government quickly decided to build up large storage facilities for grain to cope with temporary shortages. In the period between 1917 and 1919, nine giant storage buildings were built around the country.

Walking around in this all-wood building from 1918 was a spectacular experience. Although it seems that the building was a part of the civil defense for a long time, the typical signs of WWI are omnipresent – almost if nothing was ever touched since then.
