Julian Bland, Eddie Sue Welch, Vaunita Fussell, and Peyton Bowen in 1939 at Workmore High School. Peyton was a star basketball player and a couple of years later the team almost won the State Championship; they were runners-up and accomplished all this after having to practice on a dirt court. The following were on that team: Robert Fletcher, Bill Fletcher, Preston Spires, Olan "Pete" White, Herman Rawlins, Ewell Rivers, Stanley Clements, and Charles Batchelor. I think this team was around 41 or 42 -- Around 39 or 40 the team also did well -- they also went to State -- W.J. Padgett, Captain and Coach, Emory Rivers, Peyton Bowen, Charles Holland, and Bill Swain. The old Black and Gold truly showed their colors in that day! Vaunita Fussell later married Earl Waldon who coached the team just before W.J. Padgett took over; Julian Bland married my Aunt Dorothy Anderson Bland and someone will have to tell me about Eddie Sue Welch and Peyton Bowen.
