pose after looking at the documents of Thomas Swain. Swain deeded the land for
the church at Jacksonville for $10 in the early 1800's. The courthouse was also
built on the property. Thomas Swain and General John Coffee, with huge crews of
workmen, built the Coffee Road from Swain's Ferry and Landing, Jacksonville, Ga., to
Tallahassee, Fl. The road was built on orders and commission from Gov. John Clark
who had been a neighbor of Swain and Coffee when he lived on his plantation at
Jacksonville, Ga. Alexander Stephens, later Vice-President of the Confederacy, was
the personal attorney of Thomas Swain. Swain was married to one of the daughters
of Mark Pridgen, early settler of the area. It took over ten years to settle Swain's estate.
