Anson Dodge, II - Grandson of W.E. Dodge & Preacher At Christ Church

Anson Dodge was a character of Eugenia Price's "Beloved Invader," and sometimes a visitor to the pine barrens of Telfair County. It is said he told his grandfather that he could learn as much among the pines of Telfair as he could in a formal seminary. Controversy and violence raged when the Dodges claimed the land that the inhabitants had lived on for years. They also cut the timber. The court scrapes, killings, and general discord came to be known as the Dodge Land and Timber Troubles. [Photo courtesy of Skeet & Ruby Brown]

I am a direct descendant of the Lancaster family involved in the land troubles. It's quite a fascinating story and one that displays one more example of the turbulence after the War Between The States. Sadness and angst for all involved.

After reading the trilogy of the Gould/Dodge families written by Eugenia Price, my husband and I are about to take a vacation trip to St. Simon's Island. In my heart, I will never forget the life story of Anson Green Phelps Dodge, Jr., after his visit to St. Simon's Island to visit his father, his marriage to his first love Ellen, her tragic death on their honeymoon, his bringing her back to St. Simon's Island, and rebuilding Christ Church in her honor, his remarriage some years later to Anna Gould Dodge, and the birth and death of his beloved son, Anson III. They will live in my memory and heart forever. I am anxious to see and feel their presence at Christ Church... even though I know it is not nearly as it was when they lived there, I am anxious to make the trip.
