About 400 years ago, the Spanish explored the North Carolina coast looking for gold. Of course, they didn't find any. It was too difficult to get the horses back on the ships, so they left them here. The herd is about 150- 200 horses. They couldn't care less about us. They can totally ignore us, as these two were doing.
