Bodie Island lighthouse is in the process of restoration. After more than 100 years of exposure to the sea spray, much of the metal has corroded. Hence, unlike the Cape Hatteras lighthouse to the south, or the Currituck lighthouse to the north, visitors are not allowed inside.
