Pileated Woodpecker

I could tell from the excited tone in his voice as my husband called from the kitchen, that there was something exciting to photograph...and I wasn't disappointed when I found TWO of these at my suet feeders. The camera was in the closet and not set up for the lighting situation so it took a while to adjust, and knowing that these creatures are extremely shy, I started aiming and focusing way before I approached the sliding door. I think I'll leave the camera on the kitchen counter for a while! Learn more about this stunning creature, here: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Pileated_Woodpecker_dtl.html

I'm glad they found your suet feeder and have another neighborhood dining spot. Now, maybe my monthly suet bill will not be so high! BTW, I have found they prefer the inexpensive Garden Treasures brand "Woodpecker Treat" (from Lowe's) over the expensive brands sold at the bird supply stores.

Beautiful shot, Isabel. I've never seen a Pileated Woodpecker in person, but my parents who live one mile from me, have seen them in their yard. Great photo subject, for sure.

Wonderful capture Isabel!!! Really sharp focus on the bird and I just love the creamy bokeh you get with this lens!
