The cuphea plant flowers attract hummingbirds. I've seen them many times at the flowers but haven't been able to go get a camera and find them there when I come back to capture them. I bought the original plant a a garden show booth featuring pollinator plants.
When it bloomed I collected seed and saved it in the fridge. That was a few years ago. I discovered it this year and planting some in a planter on my deck, that had a basil plant in it.
I had been away for five days and when I returned home to red flowers in the pot with my basil plant. I realized that the cuphea seeds I had planted germinated and flowered.
I decided to collect seed again and realized that the seed pods were opening and dropping seed before all the seeds were mature. Did some research and learned that this is the plant's habit and that you have to check the seed pots every day to pinch off pods that have some mature seeds in them.
i will let these dry out and refrigerate them.
This is not a super sharp shot. I set the phone to macro mode and the depth of field didn't yield the best focus...but the same shot taken with a "real" camera would have had even worse depth of field because the shutter speed would have had to be too slow to get more in focus and flash would reflect off the glass bowl.
