_MG_9201 Wheel Bug

One of the scariest bugs I've ever seen - also known as an "assassin bug", it is a friend of man: http://pubs.ext.vt.edu/3104/3104-1585/3104-1585.html

I spied this one seemingly limping across my deck railing and "shot" it up close with a 17mm lens - that didn't work out too well, so I returned inside and grabbed my 300mm f/4L which has a nice macro range.

As I pointed it at the bug, it flew to the other side of the deck. I had NO IDEA it could fly and that made it even scarier - it can bite!

1/400s f/6.3 at 300.0mm iso100 full exif

Thanks Isabel.
I see the eye now on the skinny head near the base of the antenna.

Fascinating! I have never seen anything like this. And hope to never do so in person. Great capture and courage ;-).

Wow, I'm glad it lives only under your climate!

I have heard the name and seen one on TV but never in person. I would be creeped out!
