Why you need to use minus exposure compensation

I can say it's pretty much a good idea to use minus 1 exposure compensation in the camera settings to prevent burnt out highlights such as those on the blossoms. I didn't do so for this image because I didn't know if the bee would stay there when I moved the camera in to frame the shot. (Maybe if I hadn't chosen to use flash, the blossoms might not have been burnt out.)

I can imagine very much like a camera one would need to adjust exposure comp for hi lights.
