Georgia Graves, our instructor, told us the function of these holes but I will be darned if I remember what she said! (My fault, not hers!)

The holes are for the "tube feet" to stick out.. the feet are not used for walking, but for breathing. :) http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sand_dollar
