This plaque marks the spot where Chet Baker, jazz trumpeter and singer, fell to his death from a second floor hotel window. Epitomizing West Coast cool jazz, Baker had a difficult life that included drug addiction, repeated jailings, and a severe 1968 beating that knocked out most of his teeth. What actually caused the fall still remains a mystery. What is not a mystery is that the jazz world lost one of its greats and one of my favorites that day in Amsterdam.
