A DAY IN BAKERSFIELD, CA 2007

Bakersfield is about 90 miles from Los Angeles near the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley. It's an important shipping and marketing center for oil, natural gas and farm products. For the country/western folks (not!!), Merle Haggard came from Bakersfield and Buck Owens moved there and opened a nightclub, the Crystal Palace. The following images, taken primarily in the downtown area and in Oildale, hopefully show the what is and the what was of this section of Bakersfield.

Iris-Again you find so much richness in the "bleakest" of places. (At least that's how I felt about Bakersfield that day.) Your rapport with people will take you in new directions with your photography - you never met a stranger.

Great work here, Iris! Even though you say this isn't YOUR kind of photography, I'd like to think that it would become just that. You have a knack for capturing candids of people especially in their own environment and showing us this place through these people's gestures and faces.

Your visit to Bakersfield was very productive. You move your eye in new directions, here, Iris, and to good effect. I've left comments on the most expressive of them -- I was particularly impressed with the rapport you have achieved with people. Nobody seems to notice you -- you have either made friends among your subjects, or you have become the proverbial fly on the wallpaper.
