Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio

Les' ancestor Peter Babb lived in Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio in about 1800 and was a member of Short Creek Friends'Society. He is buried in Short Creek Cemetery although we can't find the headstone. Peter's son Aaron moved to nearby Pleasant Grove, Colerain Twp, Belmont County, Ohio and Les descends from that line. This particular Babb line was in this area for over 200 years.

Mt. Pleasant is a small quaint town located in a very pastoral part of Jefferson County, Ohio. It includes the historic district dedicated to its involvement in the Underground Railroad. The Quakers who founded the town were activists in the anti-slavery movement. The Quaker Yearly Meeting House shown in these pictures was built in 1814.

David Steere of Mt. Pleasant, OH and Lenawee Co., MI is my 3rd great grandfather. I am interested in contacting the person who has a clock that was owned by David Steere.

I have a American tall case clock that was purchased and owned by David Steere who lived in Short Creek back in the 1818-1819. I stopped in Mt. Pleasant to see the meeting house and met a local pastor Lloyed G. Smith. He was a local historian of the town and he produced a Quaker reunion news letter from the 1875-ish time frame. On the back page of the reunion news letter shows a picture of his son Judge J.H. Steere. I am looking for a copy of this document for my clock. The Steere family moved on to Lenawee County, Michigan in 1833. Does any one know what happened to the pastors information as he was not well in 1993 and I do not know how to contact him or where this information went. I would be happy to share what information I have found. Please contact web master for contact information. This is a wonderful town with very friendly people.

These pictures are great! My great grandparents were Quakers. My grandmother told us stories about how the slaves had walked their hill. My grandparents are at rest at Short Creek Cemetery as well.

These photos are wonderful, my families of Balls, Moores,and others of Jefferson county Ohio, were Quakers. My Sarah T. Ball was born in Richmond, Jeff. Co. she married David Maxwell of Cross creek township Jeff Co Oh. Her parents James & Ruth Woods Ball were from the Monthy Meetings in Fairfax, & Loudoun Co. Va. My great grandfather David Wakeman Maxwell son of Sarah lived in Mount Pleasant at one time with his wife and children. Thank you for the great photos.
