What an outstanding area in which to do landscape photography! The Finger Lakes area is just a few miles south-east of Rochester New York (the home of Kodak).
The Finger Lakes are so-named because of the shape of the lakes - several long and narrow lakes running in a north-south direction. The city of Ithaca, home of Cornell University, is located at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, the largest in the group.
If you want to photograph this area, getting the book "Waterfalls And Gorges Of The Finger Lakes" by Derek Doeffinger is an absolute must! The author is a professional photographer with numerous books to his credit so he gives a lot of information on not only what there is to see, but also where the best shooting places are. Beautiful color photos adorn the pages and provide the reader with inspiration. And yes, Derek is a friend so don't just take my word for it, check it out for yourself. You'll be impressed!
