Wind Scorpion

Wind Scorpion

Solifugae is one of 11 orders of Class Arachnida, which includes spiders (Arachnea), Daddylonglegs,
and several variations on the scorpion model (Whip-, Pseudo-, Wind- and True Scorpions, each an order).

This is one of the Solifugids, the Wind Scorpions. The name means "fleer from sunlight,"
but this one was running across the trail at Edgewood in the middle of the day. Fast.

About an inch (25 mm) long. Resembles a scorpion but: no stinger, no venom, no pincers. The
four sets of legs get progressively longer, front to back. The long palps are sensitive.

There are several families and genera. This one appears to belong to family
Ammotrechidae. They feed on other invertebrates including spiders and scorpions.
