Umber Skipper, Poanes melane.
This one appears to be a male, but there is very little sexual dimorphism in this
species. Antennae knobs are black with a small ruddy spot and very tiny hooks.
This is basically a Mexican species that has moved north into CA lowlands
in the 20th century. Caterpillars feed on grasses; adults nectar on a variety
of plants, including garden varieties, (here on statice, Limonium sp).
