Renown is one more Ghost Town found in central Saskatchewan. Not many signs of life and no traffic at all here anymore. The weeds grow wild and the trees sway in the wind, Yes this town has been left behind..............Enjoy Mike

I live in Renown. I still don't know why everyone left. All records are from Catholic Church, now in but there is no graveyard? That, oddly enough, is what spooks me out.

My grandfather John Edward Walsh lived and work as a farm labourer in the 1940’s. Can find anything about him after 1949. Any information about him would be greatly appreciated.

I had a great grandma ( Caroline Gille) who was quite a small child during the 1910-1920’s and had went to school at Hawkshaw school in Renown, and had and great uncle Walter Gille who raised many horses to sell. . She spoke about writing to a school friend named Hilda Neatby. Grandmas brothers were Harvey, Virden and Harold all last name Gille.it would be neat if anyone recalled anything about their history. My grandmas father was William (Billy) Gille and his brothers names Ab Gille, Richard (Dick) Gille. All were grain farmers.

My grandfather was Robert Martin, he and my Grandmother had nine children. I believe that my mother was born in that house in Renown. Her name was Ethel May Martin. I take exception to "Yvan P. Charbonneau's" comment 'of a dead Saskatchewan village'. Many of our family still live close to the village, and we all have fond memories of it.

My mother was born in Reknown, as were some of her brothers and sisters. She was related to the Munros, a cousin I think. I remember one of them driving a fuel truck for the Co-op. I remember buying penny candy at the Co-op store, and visiting many of those buildings in the pictures. One of them could be the inside of my Grandmothers kitchen. There was a row of two or three small stores on one side of the street. One of them was a pool hall, probably one table, but when the man who owned the store decided to move, my Grandfather bought the place from him so he and his buddies had someplace to go and play pool, so the story goes. Some really great pictures there, bring back a lot of memories. Thanks.

Hi Mike, Thank you for sharing these wonderful pictures. I just found out that my grandfather, William Hawkins, lived in Renown possibly in the 30's and after retuning from the war after 1945. From what I have be told, he was a butcher and a farmer in this area. I thought I would post on your wonderful site to see if there is anyone who might have known my grandfather; in hopes of learning more about him. Thank you for sharing this amazing piece of history. Dear George: Earlier today I happened to be checking something out on Google Earth and later I saw tornado images from near Regina on the Weather Network. For some reason that prompted me to do a Google search for Renown, my dad's home-town, and lo and behold not only do I stumble upon your site, but I see my family referenced in the first paragraph. My dad was Doug Munro, second oldest of the six Munro children. He died in 1979, as did his sister, Helen, in the early 70s and his brother, Ron, in the mid 80s. Shirley, Colin, and Janet now live in BC and Alberta. My grandfather passed away in 1989 and my grandmother in 2008, almost 99 years old. Small world! Ian Munro

My father's name was Andrew Anderson. He had homesteaded in the area known as the Davidson hills fter WW1 but we lived 3 miles SW of Renown when I went to school at Renown,starting in 1937. We left the area in 1947. All my schooling was at the old brick school where I knew the Munro family, Herb Reid's family Etc. The last time I passed though the town site, there was little to recognize. The Grey farm remains and Molly Deering is in the Watrous Sr. home

My dad worked in the old Co-op store in the 1950's (grey building with green trim.) He's buried not far from there. The old store had been closed for as long as I can remember, and I'd often wondered what it looked like inside. Seeing these photos made me realise I must have been in there when I was very little, because I recognise the old cabinet stereo, the chairs, and the view from that window--I always thought it was just something from a half-remembered dream. I do remember being in the community hall, though. Kind of a shock to see the roof caved in like that. I remember Dad driving us out there one night for some kind of event...it must have been in the fall...I remember it was cold and very dark, and the railway crossing signs (long gone) stood stark white in the headlights; and when we got to the hall, it was warm and bright and crowded and everyone was singing. I wanted to sing "I've Been Working on the Railroad"; everyone laughed, and then we sang it. It wasn't that long ago--a lot of those people are still around. It was a real place, filled with life, love, and laughter, not just rusty old junk.
