I think it's a courtesy to let people know that the power company will be in your area, what they are doing, to let you know your power will be off for a short time while they switch meters and may also be a legal requirement that they notified you.

Smart meters might have lead to lower costs but always a few who worry about "Big Brother"!

Lawsuits flourished down here about smart meters - but it was under the 'invasion of privacy' guise - "how dare they monitor when I use my electricity!"
