Hallonquist Saskatchewan In Black & White

Hallonquist is located on Hwy 363 South East of Swift Current SK. I have had many requests to shoot a Ghost Town all in B&W. Hallonquist is just perfect for this but I had to have a perfect weather day to shoot it. I needed overcast and cloudy skies & some wind to "bend" the grass, all this combined would give the real Ghost Town look. There are few or no residents open fields and many old buildings which include a curling rink, school, shop's and old home foundations.
I hope you all enjoy this walk though Hallonquist....................and how it was busy years ago

Had my picture taken with our name on the barn for my dad. He was thrilled. He lived for a long time in three hills but our relatives lived here.

Was there a hospital in 1935 ? I believe a person from Braddock was born there in the 30's. How far is it from Braddock ?

Great photos, and information about Hallonquist in the comments. I previously had no idea where the name came from. The Busse family settled a few miles west of here. My Mom, Eldred Busse (Johnston)and all her brothers and sisters lived in the surrounding area... and some still do... on the original homestead. My Grandpa Ted - Theadore Busse build the Hallonquist Rodeo grounds across the road on his land. I don't know when the rodeo started... but it's still going! Andera Johnston

Spent many days playing Canasta with the Berges. Eldora and Gordon. Gordon was diabetic and I remember how it gave me the willies watching him injecting his insulin. Anyone know the whereabouts of Shirley Wall or Karen Johnson? Dankindrachuk@yahoo.ca

I have been collecting the HALLONQUIST GENEALOGY for many years . Four sons,Johannas Earlansson Hallonquist 1852-192 ,Bengt John Earlandsson Hallonquist 1859-1951,Anders Earlansson Hallonquist 1862-1937 and John (Jack) Earlansson Hallonquist 1865-1919 emigrated to western Canada from Sweden, two sisters remained in Sweden Augusta Earlansdotter Jonsson 1856-1890 and Anna Christina Earlandsdotter1850- ?. Their parents were Earland Andersson1827-1899 and Benghta Arwidsdotter 1825-1886. Earland's parent's were Anders Andersson 1780-1834 and Kierstin Jonsdotter 1783 - ?. Hi, I'm looking for some information on my Grandfather Clendon Blair. He and my Grandmother, Mary Blair at the time, ran the store and post office for her mother (my ggrandmother) Elizabeth Ramsden, until my grandfather passed at a young age. And later after her mother died. She owned the store until 1961. She had 3 children for Clendon. Craig, Beth, and Marsha (my mom). They all attended Lindale school. I lived a few miles from Hallonquist and went to the two room school (7 grades) in grade one around 1962, the school closed then burned down a few years later. A god hisotry book of Hallonquist was put together in 1983 and I have a copy. My grandmother Eldora Berge live in Hallonquist for many years. It was a booming town for many years. Jo Anne Hallonquist , this town was named after him. Sue Morrison, there is a page in the history book about Michel Saverud from Norway, likely who you're looking for

My father taught there in 1959/60. I went to school there and then to high school in Vanguard. Visited a few weeks ago, wow, 50 years later! Not much remains but I did look into the school, I was sure it was a two room school as Jim Lyding taught there at the same time. I remember nailing the exterior sheathing on the curling rink which is still standing. Community Hall looks like it still may be used. I recall going to the Hall to listen to Hal Lonepine, and I believe I've heard him on Grand Old Opry. Not sure though. Some names come back to me: Danny and Shirly Wall (lived near the Lutheran church, Gord Laing (lived in the yard by the creek where the two old trucks are pictured), Brian and Carol Busse (lived west of town) Beckers (can't recall her first name), Gordon Berg, Donna Busse and her brothers Darryl and Don I think. Dale Busse, Larry Busse, Rodney Swartz (east of town), Linda Busse, Dreavers, Marie Blair I believe ran the store (remarried and moved to Moose Jaw last I knew, Gunthers ran the Esso bulk agency, elevator agent I can't recall the name. We lived in the north teacherage which was east of the school building and Jim Lyding lived in the south one. Basements have been filled and are full of junk now. Don't where anyone is these days but if anyone from that time period reads this you can get in touch with me in Black Diamond, AB 403-770-9116

Scary, I just googled my old home town and these pictures came up. I was raised on a farm 3 miles from there. Great photos. My grandmother lived in this town. My 90 year old father could likely tell you who lived in all the houses. The white church was a Lutheran Church.
