Reflection in a car window, Placerville, California, 2008

Instead of describing the entire car, I move in to stress the light passing through the glass bricks reflecting on its partially open window. The effect is haunting, and matches the materials of the period to the era of the car itself. I converted the image to black and white, because the car and the design of the glass brick window look like they belonged to an era of black and white photography. The reflection of the glass brick window also divides past from present – we stand in the present, yet whispers from the past can be imagined coming from the dark interior of the car.

Thanks, Endre. Mood is always related to the emotions, and nostalgia is an emotional state.

Thanks for noting the importance of the door being slightly ajar, Carol. I had not noticed it until now. I considered sepiatone, but thought black and white would better express the art deco era of this car and the glass brick reflection. I don't think this car is on Cold Springs Road -- we were shooting an abandoned service station, and found the back door had been left wide open, and this car was parked inside. We did see another old car parked in a barn right along side of a road between Placerville and Coloma, however. A photo of it is athttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/97668292 Since I was not driving, I had no idea of name of the road it is on. Could that be the old car that you saw on Cold Springs Road?

I like the door appearing to be ajar....inviting us to experience the past inside. You could also have done this in sepiatone, but I do like the black and white. Is this the car on Cold Springs Road?
