The bus, Delhi, India, 2008

It is appropriate that I begin this gallery on bus-bound photography with a shot of a bus. In this case, I was shooting from a side window, and we were stopped in heavy traffic.
Because my bus was not in motion, I had time to focus on the advertisement in the background and shoot numerous subjects as they passed in front of it. In this case, a school bus and a solitary bicycle rider arrived simultaneously. Using burst shooting, a 188mm telephoto focal length, and a fast 1/250th of a second shutter speed, I was able to squeeze the rider in time and space, caught incongruously between a school bus and the advertisement.

Again, what seems chaotic to us in the West, might be life as usual to an Indian. I did feel the population pressure in India. It reminds me a lot of life in New York City, a culture that also seems to exist in chaos, yet is perfectly
understandable to the savvy New Yorker.

I'm impressed by the faces of India...everywhere. From the banners to the side and to the back, from the cyclist and then to the faces in the school bus - it's a culture accustomed to existing in chaos, trying to lead their individual lives to the best they can.

Cramped is a good word to describe India's urban infrastructure, Vera. Think of a billion people moving from bikes to cars. Add sacred cows, camels, and gawking tourists such as myself. You can see why it is a tight squeeze here.

This photo lets me imagine how cramped the roads are. He rides his bicycle without fear on what appears to be a narrow street shared by the bus. Not my cup of tea. I'll take biking down a quiet country road any day.

The composition was previsualized, Mo. I had time to wait for things to come into my frame, since our side of the road was gridlocked and the other side of the road was not.

Nice composition and the colors work very well together too
