Arrival at Jhansi, India, 2008

This is the only image showing the exterior of the coaches themselves. As I alighted from the train, a man ran up waving his arm and talking to us in Hindi. I had no idea what he might have wanted. However his gesture suggests a big hello, a spontaneous welcome of sorts, and an end to the train ride itself.

I love this interpretation, Jenene -- I have no idea if this man works for the railroad or is a passenger or a tout. There are people selling services in India everywhere you look. But he does seem to be assertive and full of energy and that was why I made the image.

He is looking past you to the next customer. His hand pushes in the plastic covering on the window, and although he's not looking in, he's exhibiting an aura of control over the train. He'll find someone to fill that seat, and I think a spot for that luggage he is toting.
