Multi-tasking, Agra-Jhansi Express, India, 2008

A young mother entering the train at Morana must not only handle the heavy door to the coach. She must also carry her baby and supervise another young child as she enters. The dark and gritty nature of this image complements the difficult nature of this moment. (I was sorely tempted to help with the transition, but decided otherwise. I might have made matters worse. So I stayed in my front row seat and made photographs of the logistical struggles.)

That is exactly what I was trying to express here, Jenene -- traveling with young children is a universal challenge, and in this case, she is handling everything quite well. She never looked for help. Self-confidence is a human value I tried to express here.

This image speaks to me personally. I travelled many miles, domestic and international, alone with my children. It is not really an easy thing to do, but the mother's face is such a study in the resignation of her post - she does it without complaint or worry, just the pulling in of her lower lip and you know she's willing it all to go right.

Thanks, Alina -- I was sitting right in front of that door. I photographed everyone who entered the car, and this one said the most to me.
