An older Kurdish gentleman wearing the traditional men’s costume of the Hakkâri, Siirt, Şırnak and Mardin region. Apart from the ordinary ready-to-wear shirt and cardigan, it consists of five garments: large pyjamas-like trousers with wide straight legs reaching to the ground (not shown on the picture), a sleeveless waistcoat, a jacket with long sleeves (all three made of the same mohair fabric), and a woollen belt held in place by a leather belt. On the head he wears the traditional head scarf, called ‘poşi’ of ‘pûşi’ in Kurdish (and ‘poşu’ in Turkish). Its design is of North-Syrian (Kurdish) origin and is related (there) to the Barzani tribe; but Kurdish men’s poşi have a lot of other designs too.
