Lighting festive fires during the Newroz festival is an ancestral custom, going back to Zoroastrian worship
in antiquity (as far as the Kurds are concerned). Fire and its light are symbol of Creation and welfare, as night and darkness stand for evil and death; the Newroz fire is thus a celebration of spring and renewed life.
