This is a relic of the days when the Shropshire Union was a busy working canal, 1785 onwards with horse drawn narrow boats.
Beeston Castle can be seen in the background.
The long beams lying to the left are used to drain the locks behind me.
They slide down channels cut into the sandstone blocks and stack on top of each other to hold back the water.
