Nap, Tra Vinh, Vietnam, 2008

The conical hat, an iconic symbol of Vietnam, not only offers shade, but if pulled well forward, it can turn day into night. If this conical hat is the traditional symbol of Vietnam, the motorbike has become the ultimate symbol of Vietnam today. They are seen here in incongruous juxtaposition. When one is not trying to get somewhere, or struggling to keep up with the ever increasing pace and demands of daily life in Vietnam, they are often seen catching up on lost sleep. In Vietnam, from Hanoi to the Mekong Delta, sleep is often where you can find it.

Thanks for pointing up still another incongruous contrast here, Jenene. The sleeping woman represents utter peace while the bike leaning towards her stands for the chaos and din that characterize much of Vietnam. I did not notice the child's bike at upper right until you mentioned it. It certainly does add a symbolic nod towards the generation in training.

It's an interesting juxtaposition - the constant and chaotic movement next to the improvised quiet moments (sleep). I love that you show the little pink bike in the upper right - the training wheels are set for the next generation.
