Bursa dec 2007 1394.jpg

It is the most important and magnificent of the main gates of Bursa walls. The gate, which directly enters the city from the east, was the main gate of Hisarı, opening to the east and also to the silk and spice route. It was the main gate used by the Tekfurs and state administrators to enter and exit the city, and also used in magnificent ceremonies and official parades.

During the Ottoman period, it was also known as the “Castle Gate” and “Hisar Gate”. It was called the “Saltanat Gate” because it was located at the beginning of the road leading to the Bey Palace, and the “Balıkpazarı Gate” and “Mint Gate” because it was near Balıkpazarı and the Mint.

The Saltanat Gate was rebuilt with the reconstruction and restoration work initiated by the Osmangazi Municipality in 2005. The original inscription indicating that the gate was repaired in 1418 during the reign of Çelebi Mehmed was taken from the Bursa Turkish-Islamic Arts Museum and placed in its place on the gate.
