CGRU Miami IV, Base Miami Beach, Florida

We were the office staff for USCG Reserve Unit Miami IV (formerly ORTUAG 07-83479) at Base Miami Beach on Causeway Island off of MacArthur Causeway. The ladies joined the unit in 1973 and 1974 as I recall. They surely changed the atmosphere of the previously all-male unit for the better but the Coast Guard had to start the program of admitting women because all the male reservists were getting out at the end of the 6-year reserve enlistments and few males were joining due to the Vietnam War winding down. Since I had four years previous active duty I was tasked with training them on the job durinag our reserve drills and they quickly got up to speed doing correspondence, personnel work and supply work. The hair length standards for males were different then and I can't believe I wore mine that long and curly.

We have a generational gap when you say that because times were different back then. The ladies had a definitely friendlier mindset and there was far more humor in the workplace. I think if you study photos of ladies from the 70's and further back you will find a lot of similar shots where they hike up their skirts a little like this to spice up the photo. There's another one in one of my old Miami galleries, specifically at:

I'm glad I lived when I did.
