Façade, The Forbidden City, Beijing, China, 2007

Completed in 1420, the Forbidden City is China's most magnificent palace complex. Twenty-four emperors ruled from here for nearly 500 years. I found the stained, crumbling facades of its buildings still awaiting restoration to be the most compelling sights of all. They echo China's turbulent past. It is the flawed richness of the fading color that makes this image speak of that past. The greens, reds, and browns here are soothing, yet attempt to mask a decay that is quite evident at upper left and lower center. It is the tension between the beauty of the color and the reality of its flaws that gives this image it’s meaning.

I wish it could escape the restorer's hand as well...there is always beauty in historic decay. It reminds us that we are
in an ancient place.

What wonderful warm muted colors so much in contrast to the vibrant primary colors of the restored sections of the Forbidden City. These colors speak to me of a palace in the autumn of its years approaching historic decay. The crumbling facade adds context. If only this facade, which speaks of China's past, could escape restoration!

Thank you, Marcia, for coming to my galleries. I hope that you will find things here that will be of value to you in your own art -- which is both substantive and provocative.

Your remarkably substantive comment puts this image into its historical context, Patricia. The Forbidden City is a museum of Imperial history, a history that gradually declined from absolute power to chaos and decay. Yet it also represents a rich ulture that is very much alive, and if you can see that life in these faded colors, the image is doing what I intended. As I noted, this image is a study in tension between beauty and decay, and you have certainly echoed that study in your commentary.

This image becomes iconiic in my eyes as I see the symbols of royalty sliding down into the decay while the green horizontal panels speak to me of levels of development in China's evolution. The faded colors tell of a culture that is old yet still alive with meaning.
