Natural camouflage, The Forbidden City, Beijing, China, 2007

The quiet Eastern Courtyards of The Forbidden City hold many wonders, among them some trees that look as if they are wearing military garb. The green and brown coloration, and the jigsaw puzzle-like shapes of those color patches are stunning reminders that nature knows how to take care of its own. I moved in to abstract that bark, including none of the tree’s shape or form. The knot at lower left is the only clue I offer.

As you note, the knot is the major clue here -- I did not intend to make the tree invisible, but rather use abstraction to change our impressions of it. Thanks, Claudia, for coming to this image.

Thanks for seeing the colored bark as a curtain hiding secrets. You use your imagination well here, Iris, and that is what I had hoped this image would do -- stimulate thought and wonder.

As you might know, I am really drawn to tree art or art in nature. This image is no exception. Your abstracted "natural camouflage" could also be viewed as a silk curtain with a center fold camouflaging the forbidden secrets of the Forbidden City.....and I'm sure there were many.

You see a beautiful story in this tree bark, Patricia. It was my hope that this abstraction would serve as a prod to the imagination, and in your case, it certainly has.

Like petals floating on a green pond, this abstraction brings thoughts of lovely Chinese women hidden within the walls of the Forbidden City, seeing only one another and the one to whom they are beholden. It makes me feel sad for they lived within a prison of beauty.

That's why I made this picture, Alina. I have never seen a tree of this color before either.

I have never seen such attractive colors of the bark surface.
