The Wildes Massacre - 1838

The Wildes Massacre was near Waresboro. The tragedy underlined the fact that the Indians were still around. Some of the boys were able to get away and so we still have the Wildes Family descendants today. About nine were killed and they were put in a wagon and buried in a mass grave. There is a marker at the spot.

Does anyone have pictures? I sure do! And it appears there are many people pretending to be a descendant of the Maximillian Wildes. You should be ashamed of yourself. You know who you are!

Julie Ann McDonald Smith 11-May-2016 22:27
My father, Michael Joseph McDonald Sr., was the oldest son of Willeenn McDonald, a Wilde decendent. Her great grandfather was one of the surviving Wilde sons. Willeenn and Edward McDonald had 11 children, 9 of whom are still alive and well. I am the youngest child of Michael Sr., having one brother and two sisters. My brother, Michael Joseph McDonald Jr., was the oldest McDonald grandchild, and we unfortunately lost him July 16, 2015, a day before his 57th birthday. There are still many decendents, having 29 cousins, all with families of their own now. Reading about Billy Bowlegs in the massacre, how ironic that I move to an area he also took over... FORT WALTON BEACH, FL. There is a weekend festival in his name with a pirate ship reenactment, fireworks, night parade, and some of the most elegant pirate attire ever seen. The king is unknown until he is unmasked in public during the festival. I very much look forward to one day visiting Waycross, GA where my grandmother was born, and see the monument placed in her family's honor.

The Wildes/Wilds reunion is held the second Sunday in October every year. The location is the Okefenokee Swamp Park in Waycross, GA. Make plans now for the 2015 reunion. It will be a celebration of 60 years we've been having reunions. There will be many activities, historical displays, entertainment, and much more! We also have a family cookbook for $20.00 It was printed to raise funds for the museum maintenance. The family history book is now on CD and it is $40.00. If you are a male and you are a direct descendant of one of the brothers (Wildes/Wilds name passed straight to you), we are interested in you helping our DNA project! Check out our website at wildesfamily.org. We also have a Facebook group, "Wildes/Wilds Family of SE Georgia." If you have questions, feel free to contact me.

Her mother's name was Blanche, aunt named Madge, and an uncle (whose name I did not gather). I am attempting to gather information and create a clear family genealogy.

Douglas L. Wildes 29-Jan-2006 12:49
I am a decendent of the Wildes family also but in Wisconsin. Our part of the Wildes family came from the New England states and settled in the middle of Wisconsin. What I have found to be very common with "The Wildes" is that we continue to use names from the past and give them to our children. The D.L. Wildes referred to as the "milk man" are the same intials as my father ( Durlin Lee Wildes ) and my own ( Douglas Lee Wildes ) Do you have any idea what the D.L. letters stand for? I hope to visit the Old Jacksonville, GA site some day as well as the Salem, MA site of the "Witch Trails of Salem" where Sarah Wildes was put to death as a witch.

What is the story about an Indian uprising in 1838? I would love to reead about it.
Julian Williams08-Jun-2002 04:24
Jackie,
Thanks for posting a message re: The Wildes Family -- D.L. Wildes delivered milk to my father's store in Jacksonville -- we thought the world of him -- Merle and Joyce played basketball at Broxton -- I talk with Kenny occasionally here in Douglas -- you have a great family and it has been my pleasure to know some of them -- Julian. PS - Apologize for not checking this part of the site as I should. Oh, I visited the Wildes Monument where the massacre took place -- have you?
Jackie 19-May-2002 17:29
I am a decendat of the Wildes family and am recently looking into our family history. I was happy to find this. My grandmother wrote about the Wildes massacre by what she was told by family.
