L.S.T. (long slow target).jpg(838)

along the Illinois River

Unfortunately I didn't take any photo's on the other side on the IL river. I left that to Demorcan (Wayne) & not sure when he will post them. This is the rear end of the LST. It was the 1st to hit land on D-day. WWII Carrying men, tanks, jeeps, & what other artillery was required.
This is the 1st in the USA it was retrieved from Greece not to long ago. Headed to the town that it was built in. (here in IL) For restoral.
It was in Port here for a couple weeks, with tours, in trying to raise the $$. Having made other stops along it's way "home".

LST stands for Landing Ship Tank. It's home is in Evansville, Indiana. She still takes trips up the Ohio River. More LSTs were built in Evansville shipyard during the war than anywhere else. The US at one point was producing 2 a week. Over 1000 were built and it was said that if not for the LSTs America would not have won the war. She carried troops and supplies to the war and brought wounded aboard for mending. She is over 300' long and a beautiful sight. Nice picture!
