The famous 54 foot statue of the shadow of Sandino which stands on a hill above Managua. Sandino fought against political control by the U.S. and the presence of U.S. Marines in Nicaragua. When, in 1935, the Marines left, Sandino's forces laid down arms and Sandino made conciliatory overtures to the U.S.-backed Anastasio Somoza Garcia, but Somoza had him killed.
