The National Palace building where Sandinista forces took the entire legislature hostage in 1978, in one of the last dramatic events prior to Somoza's exit in 1979. This building sits just to the side of the old cathedral square. Posters refer to Sandino, the national hero of the 1920s and early 1930s, and to Carlos Fonseca who revived his memory in founding the FSLN, or Sandinista Front, in 1961.
