Experimenting with new ND Grad filters. My originals got all rubbed & scratched from 2+ years of taking them in and out of my photo vest pocket. Didn't discover the problem until away for 2 week in NH & noticed *bad* images. This time, paid big bucks for Singh-Ray ND Grads (one 3-stop soft edge and one 3-stop reverse grad). In several mornings of experimenting, I've discovered that for much of what I like to shoot early in the morning, the reverse is what I should have had all along. Live & learn. These come in their own lined leather pouch so hopefully they'll hold up better than my original Hi-Techs (for $120 each, they should). I expected them to be glass since the ads did not say resin & was disappointed to find that they aren't glass. My belief, possibly incorrect, is that the resin are more prone to rub/scratch problems that I encountered.
Spot metered in the cattails and used the reverse grad ND with the start of the dark at the bottom of the sun's reflection. This gave better results that the normal grad ND. Shots similar to this normally are impossible without a grad ND. However, this particular shot could have been made without one since I opted to go for silhouettes in the cattails instead of detail.
