We came across this Hawaiian Monk Seal on a deserted beach near Turtle Bay. These animals are endangered, numbering approximately 1200. We felt very lucky to see it.
This particular seal was probably a female. Females are somewhat larger than males; females are roughly 7 feet long and can weigh as much as 600 pounds. Monk Seals are incredibly powerful swimmers. They can dive 600 feet and stay under water for 20 minutes.
