1960 - the pool and garden area at the Silver Sands motel at 301 Ocean Drive, Key Biscayne

301 Ocean Drive, Key Biscayne, Florida

The was the first hotel south of the Crandon Park cabanas and the stretch of land and beach in between the two was undeveloped and a great place to make out with your girl on a blanket or in the water in the mid 60s. The Silver Sands was owned by Claughton Hotels, Inc. and they obtained a variance to put a nice restaurant named the Silver Dollar on the east end of the hotel so folks could dine overlooking the beach, surf and ocean. It was beautiful, the food was great and I have several fond memories of dining there in the mid to late 70s.

Ed Claughton , original owner, was a Miami Sr. H.S. acquaintance. We were in the 1945 graduating class.

Don, we just had our Coral Gables High 40th reunion at the Silver Sands. It doesn't look very different except for the bungalows built in the center.

This brings back such lovely memories. We lived in New York back then and were booked at the Sonesta Beach Hotel next door for our honeymoon in 1972. It was beautiful, great views, great service, etc. But when we found The Silver Sands next door we basically never left until it was time to fly back home. We returned to Miami twice and stayed at the Silver Sands both times. Thanks for the memories.

Foundation is still there. WHY the motel is still there, considering the value of the property, I have no idea.

Thanks Dave! I couldn't remember it to save my soul. It was a great little restaurant with a view that no other place in town could match. Don

The restaurant was the Silver Dollar. My dad like to take us on the weekends for lunch and then we could laze on the beach. It was truly a tranquil and beautiful place. What a shame to lose it to the behomoths that are there now!
