Almost Mohawk Hairstyle

Sapa, Vietnam

Very often we see little children playing with sand and getting themselves dirty. This boy clad in a dirty T-shirt, held on to a lump of clay. This is probably the only thing around for him to play with other than a few stones on the ground. It is so different if we compared to a city kid with lots of toys to play with. He probably hasn't even seen a hot wheeler car before. I am sure if you were to put your kid here with them, they would probably have no problem blending in but if he were to see that car, he would be thrilled and also wished he owned one.
Check out this shot and you will know what I mean.

Nicely composed and DOF with the emphasis on his facial expression and the lump of clay in his hand. This shot does tell a story.

So right.Kids dont appreciate anymore. I see them all the time in my clinic. The parents dont get it either.
My kids have to work for the things they want. We give them jobs around the house but they are being taught the value of work.I started working at a golf course carying rich guys clubs around when I was 11 years old and worked ever since.I only became a doctor when I was 48 years old and didnt always have it so nice.I refuse to let my kids grow up like so many I see, especially doctors kids (not all!!) Partents forgot they can say NO!! Too many families where both mom and dad work but mainly to hve too many things that arent appreciated Whew sorry you struck a nerve
GREAT photojournalism my friend

Azlin and Celia have eloquently described many of the the expressive values of this image, Tricia. For me, the hairstyle plays a minimal role in the image. I see the strongest message in the hands -- the way he holds that lump of clay in one of them, with the other poised to make something out of it. He becomes a metapor for man, the creator. The incongruity becomes significant -- the youngest, most impovershed, and helpless among us become a symbol for the fate of tommorow's world. The image asks the question: what will he, and millions like him, bring to that future?
(One technical suggestion, Tricia -- avoid gimmicky vignetting. The dark side of the image looks as if it has been added on later in Photoshop, and calls attention to form instead of content.)

beautiful image.
Cecilia Lim05-Jun-2007 14:09
Tricia, this image made me realize the importance of the context which we bring from our lives to the interpretation of this image. If I had been one of his pals or fellow villagers looking at this image, I would never have given this image any further thought. But because of the differences in poverty levels and culture, this image speaks to us more poignantly about the different ways we value life and happiness, which in many ways I feel, are influenced by what our society tells us. This little boy seems completey contented being pantless, in a dirty shirt playing in the mud. But in our modern city culture, we should be fully clothed, clean and play with non-toxic, hygenic, child-safe rated toys! The contrast! What is truly beautiful about this image is the reference that it makes to a child's resourcefulness and creativity- His ability to bring joy to himself from within, with the very little that he has in life. Unfortunately, modern societies are too dependent on external factors! As Azlin says, no wonder we are spiritually impoverised!

Azlin, you stripped the exact words from my mind. It only shows how materialistic we can get once we are in the state of `civilisation'.
Azlin Ahmad05-Jun-2007 13:11
That's exactly what I thought, even before reading your caption. We are all so blessed to be materially very well provided for, yet I wonder who is the happier one - this innocent child who finds great joy in a little lump of clay, or all of us who are financially well off but spiritually impoverished? Of course, I'm only speaking for myself..! Great shot, voted.
Katie Chew05-Jun-2007 13:06
