Marianne Cope took on the challenge to succeed Father Damien in the Leper colony in Kalaupapa.
She, and the fellow Sisters Leopoldina Burns and Vincentia McCormick of the order of St. Francis
arrived in Kalaupapa in November 1888. They maintained homes and provided guidance for residents of the
colony. Follow the above link for details about the lives and legacy of these women. Their story never gained
the fame of the legendary Father Damien. Their legacy and hardship is nonetheless comparable.
