The name comes from Anglo Saxon "Rode" meaning cross. Originally a cross was mounted on top. The Rood screen separated the outer nave, where lay congregation was located, from the monks in the chancel. In Clontuskert a 17th century wall was built on the chancel side and this has been reproduced in the reconstruction. This part of the building dates from the 15th centuru rebuild.
