Tim makes a good point here, Shirley. I always enjoy it when you move into abstraction and symbolism. The parent is the hovering shadow -- never out of sight, yet letting the child do its own thing.

I see this as a metaphor for parenthood. the children play and wander along the growing edge of their lives and the parents stay in the background, ready to give aide if needed, watchful, yet not overpowering.
